Chulk Outline

by Jessica Polko

Toronto called up RHP Brian Bowles, RHP Vinny Chulk, Howie Clark, and RHP Dan Reichert after rosters expanded in September. Chulk is the only one of the group who hasn't spent time on the major league team previously.

The Blue Jays drafted Chulk out of St. Thomas University with their 12th round pick of the 2000 draft. After the draft Chulk pitched as a starter for Medicine Hat in the Rookie-level Pioneer League, he then split 2001 between A+ Dunedin in the Florida State League, AAA Syracuse in the International League, and AA Tennessee in the Southern Leauge. While the righty worked as a reliever for most of 2001, Toronto moved him back into the rotation last year and left him at AA Tennessee for most of the season with only a brief return to AAA Syracuse. He missed some time due to elbow soreness, but when healthy, the 24-year-old compiled a 90:46 K:BB with 118 H and 14 HR allowed in 119.1 IP for a 4.22 ERA over 23 appearances, including 21 starts at AAA Syracuse.

Chulk made his major league debut in relief of Dan Reichert in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Blue Jays September 8th game at New York. He allowed singles to the first two batters he faced, Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi, before Bernie Williams grounded out. Hideki Matsui then struck out swinging to provide Chulk with his first major league K. Chulk finished the game for Toronto, recording a 1:0 K:BB with 3 H and 0 HR allowed in 2 IP for a 0.00 ERA. While the Blue Jays could potentially call upon him for a spot start, he probably simply will work multi-inning relief this September. Chulk doesn't possess outstanding skills, but he could win a job in the rotation next season and should be able to pitch acceptably.
