2004 League Review: CSALC
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Although CSALC(renamed from last season's Fantasy Baseball Review American League Challenge, or FBRALC, discussed here last year), didn't shift to an auction, we weren't displeased with our team as we exited the draft and expected to remain competitive throughout the season. CSALC is technically a companion league to CSNLC, which I'll discuss tomorrow, but the leagues don't share all the same owners. Other differences include the CSNALC employing a draft format rather than an auction and remaining a single-season league without keepers.

Today's Fantasy Rx: The primary lesson here is the corollary to what we learned in FSICNL this season: don't draft more than a couple starting pitchers from the same team. We gambled heavily on the deeper Kauffman Stadium fences resulting in strong seasons from Royals' pitchers, and the breakdown of Brian Anderson and Darrell May severely limited our upside here. Although owning multiple starters doesn't result in the category cascades that result from the RBI and Runs production of several position players rostered from one team, a weak defense similarly can sabotage qualitative numbers, so continue to diversify your player acquisitions among as many teams as possible.
