2004 Hitting: August NL Overachievers
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Arizona: Quinton McCracken, OF
47/170 for .276/.326/.388 with 2 HR, 13 RBI, 26 R, 3/8 SB%,
and a 13:24 between Seattle and Arizona.

With a .293/.340/.420 over the last two months as a primary outfield starter, McCracken should continue providing acceptable stats as a fifth outfielder given his relative skill rebound this season. Unfortunately, the 34-year-old journeyman shouldn't remain in Arizona next year, so the Diamondbacks should look to give at-bats to a likely call-up like Josh Kroeger. McCracken's playing time should drop considerably within the next week, and since he only owns a decent average without much corresponding quantitative value, shop him immediately, regardless of your team's current level of competitiveness, to see if you can net a younger player with better upside.

We'll continue tomorrow with American League overachieving pitchers.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Although a few dozen players will join big league rosters over the next couple weeks, only a small percentage of those players should contribute to fantasy teams over the balance of the season. NL position players worth targeting include Arizona's Josh Kroeger, Colorado's Garrett Atkins, Houston's Chris Burke, Los Angeles' Antonio Perez, Montreal's Brendan Harris, San Diego's Xavier Nady, San Francisco's and Jason Ellison. These players own good shots at earning positive value regardless of their playing time, and everyone save Perez and Ellison should enter spring training as a probable Opening Day starter.
