2004 Hitting: August AL Overachievers
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Anaheim: Troy Glaus, 3B
32/110 for .291/.391/.682 with 11 HR, 28 RBI, 30 R, 1/3 SB%,
and a 16:28 BB:K.

A leading MVP candidate when another right shoulder injury seemingly ended his season in May, he returned a few days ago to replace Tim Salmon and Jeff DaVanon as Anaheim's DH. While I don't expect him to maintain an above-average BA given his long layoff and the diminished .75 contact rate he compiled at the beginning of the season, I also see no reason he can't resume his former level of power production. The 28-year-old possesses as much power potential as any hitter in the game, making him an excellent pickup now for anyone who needs quantitative and can afford limited BA damage. Owners in keeper leagues where Glaus hit the waiver wire earlier this year also should make every effort to acquire him since he should merit a $20+ bid next spring regardless of where he lands as a free agent.

We'll continue tomorrow with National League overachieving batters.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Although a few dozen players will join big league rosters over the next couple weeks, only a small percentage of those players should contribute to fantasy teams over the balance of the season. AL position players worth targeting include Cleveland's Ryan Ludwick, Jhonny Peralta, and Brandon Phillips, Minnesota's Jason Kubel and Terry Tiffee, Oakland's Dan Johnson and Nick Swisher, Seattle's Jeremy Reed and Jamal Strong, Tampa's Matt Diaz and Joey Gathright, Texas' Adrian Gonzalez, and Toronto's Eric Crozier and Russ Adams. These players own good shots at earning positive value regardless of their playing time, and everyone save perhaps Strong and Adams should enter spring training as a probable Opening Day starter.
