Diamond Challenge

We want backups at catcher and first in roster expansion, and while we considered John Buck and Carlos Pena, we opted for Victor Martinez and David Ortiz given their superior skills and overall production.

SP(6)
Pedro Martinez: Fri:TEX(J.Wasdin?)
Curt Schilling: Tue:ANA(J.Lackey); Sun:TEX(R.Drese)
Randy Johnson: Tue:LA(J.Weaver); Sun:@SF(B.Tomko)
Mike Mussina: Sat:BAL(S.Ponson)
Roy Halladay: No start(DL)
Tim Hudson: Fri:@TOR(T.Lilly)
Javier Vazquez: Tue:CLE(J.Westbrook); Sun:BAL(Br.Chen)
Mark Mulder: Sat:@TOR(M.Batista)
Roy Oswalt: Wed:@CIN(Pa.Wilson)
Kerry Wood: Wed:@MON(T.Armas?)
Kevin Brown: Fri:BAL(Rod.Lopez)
Josh Beckett: Tue:@NYM(S.Trachsel); Sun:CHC(G.Maddux)
Jeremy Affeldt: 6 Games: 3 Home vs. DET; 3 Road at MIN.

With four doubles and Affeldt, we're fairly pleased with the staff, and we'll take Oswalt over Hudson as our sixth.

Adding Martinez and Ortiz allows us to bench the slumping Overbay and Crede, who join Cintron, Podsednik, and Burnitz on our bench. Wilkerson flips for Crawford since we need power more than steals.

Diamond Challenge 2nd Season

Adding Hermanson gives us significant saves upside and provides needed cap relief. We'll wait one more week to see how the trade deadline shakes out before using our last move.

Oswalt and Santana are easy calls to join Schilling, Randy, Vazquez, and Hermanson.

With Colorado on the road, Castilla, Clayton, and Burnitz sit, along with the slumping Hafner and Vernon Wells.

Schilling, Randy, Vazquez, Oswalt, and the two closers gives us a respectable staff.

We see no reason to remove Piazza, Fullmer, Crede, or Kaz Matsui from our bench, and we don't have the cap room to insert Pierre or Podsednik.

Fantasy Baseball & Budget Baseball
(Same game = same rosters and moves for both teams)

Hermanson offers significant upside in points leagues, making him a great addition, and then we see no reason not to pick up Johan Santana given his great schedule over the next three weeks.

SP(6)
Curt Schilling: Tue:ANA(J.Lackey); Sun:TEX(R.Drese)
Randy Johnson: Tue:LA(J.Weaver); Sun:@SF(B.Tomko)

Johan Santana: Fri:KC(D.May)
Dustin Hermanson: 7 Games: 1 Road at ATL; 3 Home vs. COL; 3 Home vs. ARI.

With four doubles, Santana, and Hermanson, we're pleased with this pitching alignment.

LeCroy, Helton, Giles, Cintron, Vernon Wells, and Kearns stay glued to our bench, although adding the inexpensive Hermanson gives us room to run Lowell for Tony Batista and Miguel Cabrera for Overbay.

Mid-Season Fantasy Baseball

Adding Hermanson is an obvious call due to his upside in points leagues and his very cap-friendly salary.

We're also spending to buy Varitek given his dominance and CJ's struggles.

SP(6)
Curt Schilling: Tue:ANA(J.Lackey); Sun:TEX(R.Drese)
Randy Johnson: Tue:LA(J.Weaver); Sun:@SF(B.Tomko)
Tim Hudson: Fri:@TOR(T.Lilly)
Roger Clemens: Fri:PIT(Ol.Perez)
Mark Mulder: Sat:@TOR(M.Batista)
Roy Oswalt: Wed:@CIN(Pa.Wilson)
Matt Clement: Sat:@FLO(D.Willis)
Ben Sheets: Thu:PIT(K.Wells?)
Johan Santana: Fri:KC(D.May)
Carl Pavano: Thu:@NYM(J.Seo)
Dustin Hermanson: 7 Games: 1 Road at ATL; 3 Home vs. COL; 3 Home vs. ARI.

Although we wish we had more doubles, we don't see any logical buys given the schedule. Oswalt and Santana join Schilling, Randy, and Hermanson, and then Clemens seems slightly safer than Sheets.

Varitek subs for Victor Martinez, Blalock for Vinny Castilla, and then Bonds and Jose Guillen for Abreu and Manny. Hafner, Mike Young, Kaz Matsui, and Burnitz stay benched.

Today's Fantasy Rx: As most teams likely possess only a couple of remaining purchases at best, use your roster expansion moves on established players in clear roles. Insuring you own backups at most positions is a good idea to guard against injury. Owners in points leagues probably should focus on pitching given the imposed restrictions on the number of pitchers you can own in Fantasy Baseball, Budget Baseball, and Mid-Season Fantasy Baseball.
