Spring Training Battles: '04 NL West
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

San Francisco Giants: Somewhat surprisingly given the offseason turnover here, much of this roster already seems set. Neifi Perez will begin the season at shortstop, backed-up in the middle infield by Cody Ransom, and Pedro Feliz will back-up J.T. Snow and Edgardo Alfonzo on the corner. The only outfield change is the departure of Jose Cruz, Jr. in RF, and Michael Tucker should platoon with Jeffrey Hammonds there; Dustan Mohr also will see a respectable amount of outfield playing time.

Barring injury, Schmidt, Rueter, Jerome Williams, Brett Tomko, and Dustin Hermanson will comprise the rotation. Kevin Correia is the top alternate starter, and if Robb Nen stays injured, Matt Herges should receive the first shot at closing, followed by Felix Rodriguez. If everyone, including Nen, is healthy on Opening Day, I don't see a single roster spot available for any of the youngsters. Now, I doubt everyone will avoid injury, which could open up time for a rookie outfielder or reliever, but I see no battles in Giants' camp for significant playing time.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Anyone drafting early in the spring should consider the following players sleepers since they likely will win significant roles but still aren't guaranteed starting jobs: Los Angeles' Edwin Jackson and San Francisco's Matt Herges.
