Denney's Super Skill-et

by Jessica Polko

Cleveland called up Josh Bard and Cliff Bartosh while activating Lou Merloni from the disabled list on September 1st. The Indians then added Jason Davis to the roster of the 4th and Kyle Denney on the 14th.

Denney moved somewhat slowly through the Indians' system after Cleveland drafted him out of the University of Oklahoma with a 26th round pick in 1999, but the organization's patience may have paid off in the form of a solid addition to their rotation. Following six starts at AAA Buffalo in the International League at the end of 2003, he compiled a 113:39 K:BB with 134 H and 17 HR allowed in 134.2 IP for a 4.41 ERA over 24 starts for the Bisons this season. He's demonstrated promising dominance and solid control. The only question now is whether the 27-year-old's age and potential home run problems will prevent him from securing a place in the Indians' 2005 rotation. Unfortunately, he failed to make a strong impression in his first major league start, compiling a 1:2 K:BB with 10 H and 2 HR allowed in 3.1 IP against the Tigers yesterday.
