Fried Salmon II

by Jessica Polko

Anaheim placed OF-R Tim Salmon on the disabled list on August 29th. Salmon tried to continue playing after an MRI revealed substantial damage in his left shoulder in mid-July. However, he's been too sore to contribute recently. He still plans to wait until after the season before undergoing surgery to repair his torn rotator cuff and biceps tendon, but the Angels want him to get a few weeks of rest now, so he'll have a better chance of being able to contribute over the last couple of weeks of the season and possibly in the post-season. As the move is retroactive to the 24th, he will be eligible to return on September 8th.

In conjunction with Salmon's move to the DL, Anaheim activated 3B-R Troy Glaus from the disabled list and called up Adam Riggs while demoting Matt Hensley. Glaus pursued a rigorous rehab schedule and was able to match the best-case scenarios for his recovery from late May surgery on his right shoulder. He was able to maintain impressive power prior to the surgery and has shown similar success while taking batting practice and during his short rehab stint at AAA, so the Angels hope he will be able to step to the plate in September with the same vigor he displayed over the first two months of the season. One reason that Glaus may have been able to return so quickly from a surgery many felt would keep him out for the remainder of the season is that he has done little to no throwing work. Therefore, he will not attempt to play third base this year, which limits him to serving as Anaheim's designated hitter, though he is expected to hold that position as often as he is physically able. With Glaus at DH, OF-S Jeff DaVanon's playing time likely will shrink over the remainder of the season barring an injury to one of the Angels' starting outfielders.
