One Childers Left Behind

by Jessica Polko

Montreal dealt OF-L Peter Bergeron to Milwaukee for OF-L Jason Belcher and Jason Childers yesterday. The Expos were exasperated with Bergeron's lack of success during his major league opportunities, but the Brewers evidently feel that a change of scenery may help him make the jump from productive AAA player to useful major leaguer. Bergeron typically exercises patience at the plate, but difficulties with his contact rate appear to have suppressed his batting average. He's made progress in that area in the minors, but the 26-year-old has not yet applied that improvement while in the majors. His upside remains limited even if he manages to maintain a solid BA, since he possesses minimal power and only modest speed skills. However, if he proves moderately effective at the plate, the centerfielder could hold a position as a major league reserve outfielder.
