Rolls with the Punches

by Jessica Polko

Tampa Bay placed Damian Rolls on the disabled list on May 25th. Rolls violently collided with Jose Cruz, Jr. during the Devil Rays' May 23rd game against Cleveland. In addition cracking his sternum, the collision reportedly bruised Rolls' chest, liver, lungs, pancreas, and spleen. Rolls initially wanted to remain in the game after the collision, but even though his injuries were not immediately considered severe, Manager Lou Piniella pulled him. After vomiting later that evening, Rolls visited the hospital where the full extent of his injuries was discovered. Tampa Bay hopes Rolls will be able to return in three weeks, but given the extent of his injuries, I will not be surprised if he remains on the DL well into late June.

Rolls had been back in the majors for less than two weeks at the time of the accident after taking the roster spot opened when the Devil Rays placed Eduardo Perez on the DL on May 11th.
