Razing the Hundley

by Jessica Polko

Todd Hundley no longer factors into the Dodgers' spring plans, as he continues to suffer from a debilitating back injury. Hundley underwent surgery in early June of 2003 to have a fragment of a disc removed from his back. He was excited about the improvement in his condition after the surgery and seemed to have put the injury behind him by the end of the year. However, when Paul DePodesta took over as the new general manager of the Dodgers, he learned that Hundley had undergone a second similar surgery in late November of 2003. He's experience back and hip pain during his rehab from the second surgery, prompting the suspension of his spring activities. Hundley likely will undergo a series of cortisone shots and have his condition re-examined in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, this problem doesn't appear to be going anywhere. There's a possibility he could recover and begin training in a few weeks, but Manager Jim Tracy's already counting on opening the season without him. This problem could end Hundley's season and might end his career.
