Noah's Arc

by Jessica Polko

When rosters first expanded, San Francisco called up Kevin Correia, LHP Noah Lowry, Lance Niekro, Cody Ransom, Tony Torcato, and Chad Zerbe, while also activating Marvin Benard, Ray Durham, and J.T. Snow from the disabled list.

The Giants drafted Lowry out of Pepperdine University with the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2001 draft. After signing, he reported to Salem-Keizer in the Short-Season Northwest League. He then spent 2002 at A+ San Jose in the California League. The 22-year-old began this year at AA Norwich in the Eastern League, where he compiled a 97:47 K:BB with 127 H and 7 HR allowed in 118.1 IP for a 4.72 ERA over 23 starts before he received a late season promotion to AAA Fresno in the Pacific Coast League prior to his major league call-up.

Lowry likely needs to spend at least another half season in AAA solidifying his control before he'll be in a position to contribute to the Giants' rotation. However, he should give them a solid left-handed arm for the bullpen this September. He made his major league debut in relief of LHP Chad Zerbe in the top of the ninth inning of San Francisco's September 5th game against Arizona. The first batter he faced in the majors, Matt Kata, grounded out. Lowry then recorded his first K when Luis Gonzalez struck out looking. He gave up the first hit of his major league career to Shea Hillenbrand before retiring Alex Cintron on a fly out to end the inning.
