Suppan Sandwich

by Jessica Polko

Pittsburgh dealt Jeff Suppan, Brandon Lyon, and Anastacio Martinez to Boston for Freddy Sanchez and Mike Gonzalez on July 31st. Several of these names likely look familiar as the deal partially reversed the trade the two teams made earlier in the month.

The Pirates' doctors believe an MRI taken in the course of post-trade tests revealed a frayed ligament in Lyon's elbow. Boston doctors disagreed, but the Red Sox were willing to make alterations to the original trade in order to preserve good relations with Pittsburgh. As Boston considers Lyon healthy, he's only expected to remain on the disabled list for as long as he needs to recover from sitting out for more than a week.
