Lyon's New Den

by Jessica Polko

Although the trade was overshadowed by Chicago's blockbuster, Boston dealt Brandon Lyon and Anastacio Martinez to the Pirates for Scott Sauerbeck and Mike Gonzalez on Tuesday.

Boston signed Martinez as a nondrafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 1998. He bounced around the lower levels of their system until 2001 when he spent the full season at A+ Sarasota in the Florida State League before advancing to AA Trenton in the Eastern League last season. After starting for most of his career Martinez moved to relief this season and returned to the Eastern League, playing for Boston's new AA affiliate at Portland, where he compiled a 37:24 K:BB with 31 H and 3 HR allowed in 40 IP for a 2.25 ERA over 34 appearances. He's always possessed a solid strikeout rate but apparently struggles with his control, and the move to the pen doesn't seem to have helped with that problem. Unless the 24-year-old corrects his control troubles, he should knock around AA and AAA.
