Bump in the Night Game

by Jessica Polko

None of the Marlins likely were enjoying Friday's game at Boston in which the Red Sox set a new record for runs scored (ten) before the first out, but the Sox and Fenway fans rightfully were having fun until the seventh inning when Todd Walker hit a line drive back to the mound where it caught Kevin Olsen behind the right ear ending the party. Olsen fell to the ground, where medical personnel rushed to care for him. After an extended period, he was carried immobilized on a stretcher with a breathing apparatus to an ambulance, which took him to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. Fortunately, tests revealed no major or permanent damage. He suffered a cut to his right ear and a concussion, so he was placed on the DL to rest, but he's expected to fully recover.

The Marlins called up RHP Nate Bump to replace Olsen on the roster. San Francisco drafted Bump out of Pennsylvania State University with the 25th pick of the first round of the 1998 draft and then traded him to Florida with Jason Grilli for RHP Livan Hernandez during the 1999 season. He's spent the last four years at AA, only advancing to AAA Albuquerque in the Pacific Coast League this season. Prior to his promotion, the 26-year-old compiled a 52:24 K:BB with 89 H and 4 HR allowed in 85.1 IP for a 4.43 ERA over 15 starts. I don't think he's currently prepared to be an effective starter in the majors, but he should perform adequately in long relief.

Bump made his major league debut in relief of Tommy Phelps in the sixth inning of the Marlins' game in Boston yesterday. He gave up a hit to the first major league batter he faced with Manny Ramirez hitting a single into center. Bump then walked David Ortiz, hit Kevin Millar with a pitch, and allowed Gabe Kapler to double. The inning only ended because Millar was tagged out returning to third base on the double. His next inning went more smoothly, so he remained in the game through the eighth when Kapler struck out swinging to give Bump his first K. As Florida took the lead while he was on the mound, Bump also recorded his first major league win.
