Valderrama Lama Ding Dong

San Francisco placed 1B-L J.T. Snow on the disabled list on Saturday. During the first inning of the Giants' June 17th game in L.A., Snow strained his left groin. The Giants delayed placing him on the disabled list, hoping he would recover quickly. However, with other players day-to-day and Snow in danger of aggravating the injury if he rejoined the lineup, they opted for caution. As the move was retroactive to the 18th, he's eligible to rejoin the team on July 3rd, but he seems more likely to come back sometime in the second week of July.

CR-R Pedro Feliz covered 1B the first day Snow was out of the lineup, as 1B-R Andres Galarraga was wrapping up a week on the bench caused by the flue and a sore calf. Galarraga now seems to have moved past those problems and has taken over the majority of the first base playing time in Snow's absence.

The Giants called up OF-R Carlos Valderrama to replace Snow on the roster. San Francisco signed Valderrama as a nondrafted free agent out of Venezuela in 1995. After two years with their Dominican Summer League team, Valderrama spent most of three seasons at Salem-Keizer in the Short-Season Northwest League with a short stint at San Jose in the A+ California League in 1999. He then spent all of 2000 at A+ Bakersfield, but rotator cuff surgery cut short his 2001 season at AA Shreveport in the Texas League and led to him splitting last year between A+ San Jose and AA Shreveport.
