San Diego placed Ramon Vazquez on the disabled list on June 8th, retroactive to the 1st and then placed Lou Merloni on the DL on June 9th, retroactive to the 8th. Vazquez reportedly strained an oblique muscle during the Padres' May 31st game against Arizona, but the Padres believed he'd be able to return to the lineup after four or five days, so they chose not to immediately place him on the DL. San Diego hasn't announced a schedule for Vazquez's recovery, but though he'll be eligible to rejoin the team on the 16th, he doesn't seem likely to be back much before the All-Star break.

Playing short in place of Vazquez, Merloni strained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee when he collided with Rondell White in the sixth inning of the Padres' June 7th game against Minnesota. While Merloni caught the flyball the two were chasing, San Diego probably would trade the out for a healthy Merloni. Merloni is expected to miss at least three weeks.

The Padres called up Donaldo Mendez to replace Vazquez on the roster, and he's covered shortstop in all five games since Merloni's injury.
