Diamond Challenge

We obviously erred in not adding Miguel Batista and Brandon Lyon last week as the loss of those saves cost us perhaps ten spots in the division rankings, so we'll correct that mistake this week. As we like Jose Reyes and Clint Barmes at SS, we'll add Batista for Nomar, and then since we're not comfortable even running Oliver Perez for this double this week, we'll add Brandon Lyon for Perez. While we normally don't keep a reliever on the bench, we'll hold Dotel for now until we see how our new bullpen develops. Perez still intrigues us, but with awful command, little chance of winning even a dozen games, and an atrocious ground-fly, he doesn't belong on our roster in this league.

SP(6)
Randy Johnson: Fri:TOR(D.Bush)
Johan Santana: Tue:@KC(J.Lima); Sun:LAA(B.Colon)
Jason Schmidt: Tue:SD(A.Eaton); Sun:@PIT(Ol.Perez)?
Pedro Martinez: Tue:ATL(J.Smoltz); Sun:@WAS(J.Patterson)?
Roy Oswalt: Mon:@PIT(Ol.Perez); Sun:CHC(M.Prior)
Roger Clemens: Fri:CHC(G.Maddux)
Ben Sheets: Fri:CIN(B.Claussen?)?
Mark Mulder: Fri:@ATL(T.Hudson)
Jake Peavy: Fri:ARI(B.Webb)
Rich Harden: Tue:CHW(M.Buehrle)
A.J. Burnett: Thu:@COL(J.Jennings)
Josh Beckett: Tue:@COL(Jam.Wright); Sun:@PHI(C.Lidle)
Miguel Batista: 3 Home vs. TB; 3 Road at NYY.

Batista will remain in our lineup indefinitely, accompanied this week by the doubles of Santana and Oswalt, the potential doubles of Schmidt and Pedro, and then Clemens, who appears as hot as any pitcher in the game. Beckett simply looks like too much of a risk in perhaps the two best hitters' parks in the league.

Offensively, Reyes replaces the cut Nomar, and then Podsednik and Mench return to the lineup for Reed and Wright, who join Morneau and Iguchi on our bench.

With a need for cap room and more save opportunities, Brandon Lyon also will join this team as Oliver Perez departs. He'll send Dotel to the bench for now.

No starts: Randy, Clemens, Sheets?, Mulder, and Peavy.

With the Marlins in Colorado, we'll opt for the other six pitchers here.

We need power here, so Teixeira and Mench return to our lineup, displacing Carl Crawford and Jeremy Reed, who join Morneau and Iguchi on the bench.

Fantasy Baseball & Budget Baseball
(Same game = same rosters and moves for both teams)

With Oliver Perez neither accumulating many innings nor wins, we're replacing him with Roger Clemens, who probably ranks as the most dominant pitcher not currently on this team. While our bullpen concerns us, we're not making a move here quite yet.

Jason Schmidt: Tue:SD(A.Eaton); Sun:@PIT(Ol.Perez)?

A.J. Burnett: Thu:@COL(J.Jennings)
Josh Beckett: Tue:@COL(Jam.Wright); Sun:@PHI(C.Lidle)
Dan Haren: Fri:SEA(A.Sele)

Clemens and Peavy look like good choices to join Schmidt, Pedro, Santana, and Beckett, who should have good value here thanks to the lack of any qualitative downside.

The pitching puts us into a particle cap bind, requiring the benching of Pujols and Drew for Podsednik and Mench. Buck, Morneau, Hudson, Ensberg, Greene, and Kearns remain seated.

Today's Fantasy Rx: With over ten percent of the season completed, you need to examine your teams to determine specific category weaknesses. Any qualitative problems need immediate addressing, however also feel free to burn a couple moves to improve any significant quantitative deficits since those problems only will compound each additional week you wait to take action.
