'05 AL Relief Pitcher Week: Day Six
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Per popular request, I will provide all of the player information tables for these articles even if I still need to complete comments for some pitchers.

American League Relief Pitchers with $-3 DV

Quick Key to the tables:
W = Wins.  S = Saves.  ERA = Earned Run Average (ER*9/IP).
WHIP = (Walks + Hits)/IP aka Ratio.  K = Strikeouts.  BB = Bases on Balls aka Walks.
H = Hits.  IP = Innings Pitched.  P = Pitches.  B = Bats.
Age = Player's Age as of October 1, 2004.
4x4 = BA, HR, RBI, and SB in 12-team, $260 leagues with 23-man rosters.
5x5 = BA, HR, RBI, SB, and R in 12-team, $260 leagues with 23-man rosters.
RAR = Runs Above Replacement; Adjusted RAR = RAR modified to
consider whether a pitcher qualified as a starter in Scoresheet fantasy baseball .

Players are ranked in order from the highest draft value in a 4x4 league to the lowest. As the majority of fantasy leagues allow you to keep anyone traded to the other league, all players are listed in the league where they began the season.

Kelly Wunsch000.001.501122
CH White Sox4x45x5RARAdj. RAR
Age: 32P:L    B:L-3-31.51.5

Managing a 2.93 ERA on a 29:12 K:BB in 27.2 IP over 27 G for AAA Charlotte(IL) failed to convince the White Sox to give him another shot in the majors. While injuries limited Wunsch's effectiveness over the last couple years, he owns mildly intriguing skills and could flourish if he wins a job in the Dodgers' pen. Of course, I still can't recommend Wells due to his limited upside, but he at least shouldn't hurt you as short-term roster filler.

120.WSERAWHIPKBBHIP
Cliff Bartosh104.661.7125112219.1
CLE Indians4x45x5RARAdj. RAR
Age: 25P:L    B:L-3-33.13.1

Effectively toasting AAA hitters in the process of compiling a 46:8 K:BB in 35.1 IP over 28 G for AAA Buffalo(IL) earned Bartosh another look in September. He took advantage of that opportunity, compiling a 2.57 ERA on a 9:3 K:BB in 7 IP over 10 G. While the unexpectedly loaded Indians' bullpen lacks an opening for Bartosh right now, any injury to Arthur Rhodes or Scott Sauerbeck will push the young southpaw back to the majors, where he could emerge as quality short reliever by the end of the season.

121.WSERAWHIPKBBHIP
Frank Castillo000.002.000111
BOS Red Sox4x45x5RARAdj. RAR
Age: 35P:R    B:R-3-30.70.7

Registering a 10-9 record and a 4.32 ERA on a 119:33 K:BB in 162.1 IP over 24 GS(26G) for AAA Pawtucket(IL) only maintains Castillo's status as a quality AAAA arm. Even moving to Florida as a primary injury replacement for the Marlins' fragile rotation doesn't give Castillo much value. At least the veteran journeyman nabbed a ring for these scoreless innings, but with negligible fantasy potential and plenty of qualitative downside, Castillo doesn't belong on any of your teams.

'05 AL Relief Pitcher Week continues tomorrow with more American League relievers.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Few of these pitchers merit any fantasy consideration. Only Mike DeJean merits serious consideration in almost any NL league due to his dominance after joining the Mets last year; I expect him to remain similarly productive this year. Other reserve-round sleepers include Rakers, DePaula, Dunn, and Chad Gaudin, who possesses considerable downside in Toronto yet owns intriguing skills, especially considering his young age.
