2004 Pitching: August AL Underachievers
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Anaheim: Matt Hensley, RH Reliever
0-2 on a 22:7 K:BB in 21 IP over 11 G
with 28 H, 4 HR, a .74 G-F, and a 6.00 ERA.
1-3 and 5 Saves on a 45:10 K:BB in 40 IP over 27 G
with 24 H, 6 HR, and a 2.93 ERA for AAA Salt Lake(PCL).

Ignore the high ERA since Hensley's command and strong minor league numbers indicate significant potential for future success, especially as part of a loaded Angels' bullpen. He owns the dominance and control necessary to pitch effectively in the majors. While flyball problems and an unfairly elevated 12.0 H/9 can lead to disasters that contribute to a lofty ERA, I see no reason why he won't improve once injury or trade gives him the opportunity to emerge as more than a mop-up man. Hensley looks like the next candidate to develop in a growing line of impressively dominant Anaheims relievers, although only pitching-desperate teams should target him this year.

We'll continue tomorrow with National League underachieving pitchers.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Owners in deep AL leagues looking for any possible pitching advantage should target relievers and even some lesser-known starters on Oakland, Minnesota, and Boston. Only these three teams possess both above-average rotations and bullpens.
