2003 Hitting: September AL Underachievers
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Note: The beginning of most stat lines includes the following data: H/AB for BA/OBP/SLG.

Anaheim: Jose Molina, 28, C
20/106 for .189/.209/.226 with 0 HR, 6 RBI, 11 R, 0/0 SB%,
and a 1:25 BB:K for Anaheim.

Bengie's younger brother is Anaheim's new starting catcher due to Bengie's season-ending injury, however Jose demonstrates no batting aptitude whatsoever. His #P/PA fell from 3.78 to 3.49 this year as his ground-fly ratio jumped from 1.00 to 1.35, indicating Molina lost both patience and power since last season. A batting average under the Mendoza line also jumps out as an obvious problem, yet a .04 BB:K is equally troublesome. Molina only will drag down your BA if you roster him now, so even if you added him to replace Bengie, deal or cut Jose now.

Previous 2003 Angels' underachievers: April: David Eckstein; May: Scott Spiezio; June: Darin Erstad; July: Adam Kennedy; August: Tim Salmon.

We'll continue tomorrow with National League underachieving batters.

Today's Fantasy Rx: The odds of severe underachievers rebounding at this point in the year are quite low. Even if they don't lose most of their at-bats to call-ups, they likely won't contribute helpful stats for the last two weeks. Owners in tight pennant races in particular should try to find younger replacements with more immediate upside.
