2003 Pitching: June AL Overachievers
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Note: The beginning of most stat lines includes the following data: H/AB for BA/OBP/SLG.

Anaheim: Ramon Ortiz, RH Starter
9-6 on a 53:32 K:BB in 100.1 IP over 17 GS
with 118 H, 14 HR, and a .86 G-F; 4.66 ERA.

Although he also could qualify as an underachiever, Ortiz is leading the team in wins despite questionable qualitative stats. He only owns a 33520 QA log over his last few starts, and his career-worst 4.8 K/9 suggests he's more likely to encounter arm problems than rebound to a sub-4.00 ERA in the near future. Ortiz doesn't possess the overall skills to post great numbers without a solid strikeout rate, so feel free to deal him if another owner will overpay for Ortiz's wins.

May Overachiever: Scot Shields, RH Swingman
Old stats: 2-1 and 1 Save on a 38:14 K:BB in 45.2 IP over 17 G(2GS)
with 40 H, 2 HR, and a 1.51 G-F; 1.38 ERA.
Recommendation: acquire.
Stats since recommendation: 0-0 on an 11:4 K:BB in 14.2 IP over 8 G
with 8 H, 1 HR, and a 2.45 ERA.

Previous Overachievers: April: Brendan Donnelly, RH Reliever

We'll continue tomorrow with National League overachieving pitchers.

Today's Fantasy Rx: We managed to catch T3 last night while trying to stay out of the heat. Although we hope to have our AC functioning within a week, our productivity unfortunately remains low right now. Anyway, T3 offered exactly the distraction we desired as its one of the best popcorn movies we've seen in ages. The violence level is up from T2, however so is both the humor and action, so we definitely recommend it to anyone looking for two hours of purely mindless entertainment.
